When I think of family stories and traditions one of my fondest memories is that of my mother-in-love and her afghans. She made some of the most beautiful blankets you’ve ever seen. She made one for both of our children when they were first born. She even made one for me and my husband early in our marriage which we still have to this day.

The Patchwork Quilt by Valerie Flornoy with the beautiful illustrations of Jerry Pinkney gives me some of those good feelings of family love. I see in Tanya’s character a little glimpse of my daughter who sat with her grandmother and learned her craft from a young age preserving that bit of our family story.
