SONIA SOTOMAYOR – A JUDGE GROWS IN THE BRONX

AUTHOR: JONAH WINTER

ILLUSTRATOR: EDEL RODRIGUEZ

DESCRIPTION: The historic rise of a brilliant woman from humble beginnings in New York to a seat on the highest court in the land is a story of hard work, sacrifice and the love of family.

WHY I LIKE THIS BOOK: Americans of Latino descent are largely overlooked for their contributions to the growth and prominence of our nation. Jonah Winter provides an engaging addition to this arena with a profile on Sonia Sotomayor and her historic appointment to the United States Supreme Court. Her mother’s determination to educate her children through private schools, Sonia’s health challenges and her triumph to enter and graduate at the top of her Princeton University class is the stuff of legends. Edel Rodriguez portrays Sonia’s world with genuine warmth and authentic flair. The bilingual text makes this a very accessible tool for the school and home. Such stories need to be shared particularly in light of the divisions in our nation regarding immigration and the thousands of people (many already citizens) who work hard and simply want to live out the American dream for themselves and their families as so many others before them. Sonia’s story confirms the belief that the only one who can limit your possibilities is you. Hopefully more children will read her story and be inspired to spread their wings and fly!
