WHY I LIKE THIS BOOK: Dolores Huerta had a major impact on the Farm Workers movement in the United States but is almost unknown in many quarters today despite her life changing work. The challenges of migrant workers continue to escalate despite improvements given the constant hostility towards Latino immigrants and the lack of opportunity for working people south of the border. It is important to make young learners aware of this great woman as a role model and example of people willing to accept big challenges and work to make life better for someone beside themselves. Dolores could have ignored the needs of her students and their families but chose not to. As a result she impacted the quality of life for many while teaching American labor interests key lessons in the fair and equitable treatment of their workers. I consider this required reading to inspire our children and to remind ourselves of what is possible when an open mind meets a fearless spirit and a willing heart!
