We’ve all seen it in the news or even in our communities. The discomfort that comes along with conversations about the telling of African American history. What does it mean for a young African American to lack exposure to the trials and triumphs of people who look like them?

With the opening of the African American Museum of History and Culture inside the family of Smithsonian institutions, founding director Lonnie Bunch presented four challenges that arise in passing on this history.

1. The challenge of forgetting;
2. The challenge of preserving a people’s culture;
3. The challenge of maintaining a community;
4. The power of inspiration

   This week I began an exploration of this topic on my blog of the first two challenges and we’ll wrap up next week with the final two. I encourage you all to read and think on the challenges and see if there are ways that you can think of to help with overcoming these challenges. We are ALL capable of contributing to the solution.
