POWER & PLACE OF PICTURE BOOKS: BUILDING LITERACY IN YOUNG CHILDREN

Many parents and early childhood educators understand the need to develop strong literacy connections in young children. What they may not realize is the powerful role played by picture books in the acquisition of skill, knowledge and love for reading. This workshop will present strategies and approaches for building background knowledge and familiarity with models of quality children’s literature and child-centered methods for laying the foundations to effectively read, write, think and speak. The focus will include two age levels: 0-3, and 3 to 6.

THE TREASURE IN A BASKET: SENSORY LEARNING IN HEURISTIC PLAY

The brain of a child is already adapting to the environment and working to store, process and use acquired knowledge as early as birth. The neural connections that impact effective brain development and function are active and in the greatest need of appropriate stimulation between the ages of 0 and 12 months. Many parents are not aware of this need and often miss this window of opportunity to assist their child in more fully developing their mental capacities. This workshop will help parents and early childhood educators understand the nature and use of heuristic play and its positive contribution to brain building, motor development and family bonding through sensory learning.

PRE K-SCIENCE: LINKING INQUIRY TO SCIENCE LEARNING

Science education in early childhood is still in its infancy in terms of inclusion in preschool and daycare curriculums. This issue can be attributed to the  expressed concerns of many early childhood educators regarding their lack of formal training in traditional science areas (e.g.,  biology, chemistry, earth science). This workshop will provide information and approaches to science learning through inquiry-based instruction which encourage children to learn using the  natural and powerful tools of exploration and discovery.
